My memories One of my memories of my Grandfather is that although he was retired I never saw him wearing casual clothes he always wore jacket shirt tie and trousers with braces another memory is that the house was always tidy you never saw books or magazines lying around And as for the Kitchen it was tiny apart from a new cooker and a new coat paint the kitchen had not been altered since he and my grandmother bought the house in 1930’s. Another memory is the time when dad was Vicar of St Andrew’s Hartcliffe, Bristol we had chair, my Grandfather had a habit of throwing himself at a chair he did this, and went straight through the bottom of the chair. My father was the first member of the family to go to University Grandpa was always proud of my father. I think that he had quite a bit of sadness both his wife & daughter had diabetes I have no memories of my father’s sister as she died when I two and  half she was living in Exeter she had taken her daily injection but it didn’t work so she took another injection which sent her into a Diabetic coma from which she never recovered she died Christmas Eve 1959 My Grandparents were devastated, at some time in the 1950’s my Grandfather was awarded the MBE for services to the Gas Board I still have the medal I also have his WW1 medals. Another memory is of a person who had a set routine and stuck to it When my brother Martin was born in 1953 he was proud of his first Grandchild but was upset that Dad hadn’t followed family tradition and given him Derek as his second name 18th months later in 1955 I was born and in 1960 my sister was born she was given Joan as her second name in memory of Joan Another memory in the early 1970's my Brother spent his gap year in a Children’s home in Hong Kong it was while he was at the home that he met Yan Chi and decided that it be great idea for my parents to adopter her as we had a large house which we eventually did she arrived Christmas Eve 1972 Another memory I  have is of the time when dad had been made Archdeacon of Rochester my parents had been canal boaters and at one time owned a 70ft narrow boat my brother, myself & sister spent most of the holidays on it by the time dad had been made Archdeacon we had long since sold it  My Grandfather bought a large oil painting showing a canal boat being pulled by horse and gave it to Dad I have a large picture in my front room showing a yacht sailing in to the wind this was given to my Grandfather by his father as a 21st Birthday present  Another memory is of the time when both he and aunt Kitty came to stay at Rochester Kitty heard that he and my sister Sheila were going out to coffee she got ready and sat in the summerhouse He came into the garden said that he and Sheila were going turned round walked off leaving Kitty sitting there I also have on my desk a bronze figure of a young-girl knelling which also belonged to him he bought it as he said looked like my sister
